5 Hidden Gems to Discover in Sydney

4th June, 2020, in Travel Advice & Guides

Approximately 11.1 million visitors descend upon Sydney every year to marvel at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, admire the Sydney Opera House and experience Bondi Beach in real life.
While these spots are must-see destinations for anyone visiting the city, they’re also flooded with people.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle or have visited Australia or Sydney before and want to get off the beaten track, the city has a myriad of under the radar spots that are yet to be spoiled by the crowds.

Hidden Pools

Sydney has a plethora of fantastic beaches and saltwater pools, Bondi and Bronte being the most popular, but if you’re looking for something more low profile then there are a few pools that remain unspoiled and uncrowded.

Mahon Pool

It’s hidden between the Sydney sandstone and the sea in Maroubra and is the perfect place to swim and relax. It’s free to use and is open most of the year.

If you don’t fancy beating your way through bundles of people to get a spot on the beach or dodging people as you swim, then this rustic ocean pool is for you.

Maccallum Pool

Enjoy a quiet swim with an epic view of the harbour at Maccallum Pool at Cremorne Point.
This mystical pool has a timber sunbathing deck, sloping lawn and chilled out vibe. Certainly somewhere to head to for a break from the fuss of the city.

Fairy Bower Pool

This triangular-shaped pool which is located at Manly is spectacular day or night. It’s one of the oldest saltwater bathing pools in Sydney but remains low profile.

It may be small but it could be considered the most beautiful.

Secret Gardens

Wendy’s Secret Garden

Over at Lavender bay, there’s a spectacular place called Wendy’s Secret Garden, named after Wendy Whitely who transformed the area into a magical garden.

A big fig tree dominates the garden, which is laden with gorgeous colours and amazing views of the harbour. This is the perfect place for a bit of peace and quiet, take a picnic, read a book or just wander around the garden and enjoy being amongst nature.

Auburn Botanic Gardens

Take a break from the sun and surf and explore the stunning Auburn Botanic Garden. This little bit of heaven boasts a Scented Garden, a Sunken Rose Garden and a Fauna reserve and aviary.

In late winter the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the lush greens subside in comparison to perfect pinks. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident peacocks and check out the dates for the popular Cherry Blossom Festival, which is held annually.

Beaches

Milk Beach

This isolated beach in Vaucluse, which is situated at the base of Hermit Bay within the Sydney Harbour National Park offers an expansive view of Sydney. Not only this but it’s made up of white sand and aqua water.

This gorgeous beach has somehow stayed a hidden gem, so if you’re looking for a place to kick back and swim without disturbance then seek out Milk Beach.
